Are Mini Cars More Dangerous Than Larger Cars?

white mini car driving on highway | Are Mini Cars More Dangerous Than Larger Cars?We all want to drive the safest car. Yet, sometimes we compromise safety to obtain a vehicle we can afford or one we like the look of. Do these compromises mean that we are at more risk for being injured or killed in a car accident? Does the type of car you drive increase your risk of sustaining serious and fatal injuries in a car accident? Are mini cars more dangerous than their  larger counterparts? The answer is yes. Smaller cars, and especially mini cars, have a higher traffic death rate than larger vehicles, according to recent data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analyzed fatal crash data between 2012 and 2015 and they found that smaller vehicles simply do not protect their occupants the way that large vehicles do. This increased risk and decreased protection leads to fatal injuries when they are involved in an accident. Of all the small cars, however, mini cars topped the list of deadliest vehicles. The Hyundai Accent sedan and the Kia Rio sedan had the highest rate of deaths.

Among the 10 most dangerous vehicles, 5 are minicars and 3 are small cars. Only two larger vehicles made the top 10 for highest rate of driver deaths: the Dodge Challenger and the Nissan Titan Crew Cab.

Surprisingly, there were eleven vehicles that had ZERO driver deaths between 2012 and 2015.

The rate of driver deaths for 2014 models is 30 per million – which is slightly higher than the 28 per million for 2011 models.  Overall, since 1970, the rate of fatal car accidents has been on the decline, due largely to improved vehicle designs and advancements in safety technology. However, these aren’t enough to eliminate traffic fatalities. In 2015 and 2016, safety advocates saw an uptick in traffic deaths. This has been blamed largely on the improving economy. When the economy is strong, people tend to drive more and go on vacation more often. More drivers usually equate to more accidents.

When Fatal Accidents Occur

When a fatal accident occurs, families may find it difficult to know where to turn for help. Suddenly, their whole life has been turned upside down and as they grieve the loss of their loved one, creditors turn up the heat. It may be difficult to pay mortgage bills, medical expenses, and funeral expenses. When this occurs, it is important to know that you have legal rights. An experienced Northern Colorado wrongful death attorney can help you and your family during this time.

If the death of your loved one was due to the negligence of another, you may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit. Under Colorado law, a wrongful death claim may be filed by any of the following persons, or by the personal representative of the decedent on behalf of any of the following persons:

  • The surviving spouse;
  • The domestic partner;
  • The children;
  • A minor who resided in the decedent’s household for 180 days prior to the death of the decedent, and was dependent on the decedent for at least half of their support;
  • The grandchildren of the decedent, if their parent (the child of the decedent) is no longer alive, or
  • The deceased’s parents, if they were dependent on the deceased for support.
