More child custody cases focusing on child obesity
Posted on Friday, November 4th, 2011 at 8:14 pm
17 percent of the U.S. population under the age of 18-years old — or 12.5 million children — are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As this number has grown over recent years, experts say they have noticed an increased focus on child obesity in child custody cases. That is, many parents are pointing fingers and blaming each other for their child’s weight or health issues.
In custody cases, judges consider a child’s physical and mental well-being of the utmost importance. Many parents are taking their accusations beyond the contribution to a child’s obesity and are also arguing that the parenting that is making the child obese is negatively affecting the child’s future health and happiness.

Single fathers winning more often in family court hearings

According to U.S. Census figures, the number of American families led by single fathers has increased by 27.3 percent over the past 10 years. The growing number of families with single fathers has led to a greater acceptance of the role of the single father in the U.S.
Furthermore, statistics show that more and more single fathers are winning family court hearings like child custody disputes. ”If the dad is really interested in getting custody and wants to have a relationship with his kids, he is far more successful than he was 20 years ago,” said a family law professor at the University of Notre Dame.
In 1950, only 1.1 percent of American families with children involved single dads. Today, single dads are in 8 percent of American families that include children.

Judge denies custody to mother because of cancer diagnosis
Posted on Wednesday, June 8th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Recently, a North Carolina judge awarded custody of two children to their father in large part due to the fact that their mother has stage 4 breast cancer. The 37-year old mother was diagnosed with the cancer in 2007, but has been able to keep it stable through monthly treatments.
Both children, ages 6 and 11-years old, lived with their mother in Durham, North Carolina. However, the decision requires both to move in with their father, who lives just outside of Chicago, in July. The mother plans to appeal the child custody decision.
Online petitions and support groups have been created to encourage the mother’s appeal.
