You may never think about becoming disabled, but consider the statistics: According to the Social Security Administration, a young worker has a 30 percent chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. Fortunately, there’s a safety net. The Social Security Administration offers two different types of benefits to disabled workers—Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Social Security Disability Insurance benefits are intended to replace lost wages or income necessary to pay for living expenses. If you qualify for SSDI, you will eventually be entitled to Medicare benefits. To qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, you must have paid a sufficient amount in Social Security taxes in the past and meet the government’s definition of disability: "The inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment." The disability should be expected to last at least 12 months. To prove disability, you need to submit medical and hospital records along with a doctor’s statement about the extent of your disability. You may also have to undergo an independent examination.
If you are disabled and have not worked enough to qualify for SSDI benefits and have low income, you can apply for SSI. The Social Security Administration will ask for extensive paperwork, including information about how much you pay for your home, payroll slips, bank books and insurance policies, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of your doctors
Although you don’t need an attorney to file an SSDI or SSI application, many claimants are denied on this first application. At that point, you should consult an experienced social security disability attorney. Call Hull & Zimmerman immediately, since there is a time limit on appealing the decision. Hull & Zimmerman can then request a hearing and obtain whatever additional medical or other evidence of your disability that may be required.
