A New Jersey restaurant recently agreed to pay a woman $1.7 million in a slip and fall lawsuit settlement. The victim was attending a work party at Tessera Restaurant in Hamilton, New Jersey in January 2008. At the party, the restaurant informed attendees that they could use a small porch attached to the building for smoking.
The woman went through the emergency exit door to the porch to speak with a friend who was outside. After opening the emergency exit door, the door was stopped due to the large crowd in the small porch area. The door pushed until she stumbled down the cement stairs and onto a driveway below.
According to the slip and fall lawsuit, the restaurant was illegally using the emergency exit door and porch as a smoking area when they did not meet city codes.
