More child custody cases focusing on child obesity

17 percent of the U.S. population under the age of 18-years old — or 12.5 million children — are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As this number has grown over recent years, experts say they have noticed an increased focus on child obesity in child custody cases.  That is, many parents are pointing fingers and blaming each other for their child’s weight or health issues.

In custody cases, judges consider a child’s physical and mental well-being of the utmost importance.  Many parents are taking their accusations beyond the contribution to a child’s obesity and are also arguing that the parenting that is making the child obese is negatively affecting the child’s future health and happiness.
