For the first time in 2 years, the Social Security Administration is increasing disability payments. The agency began using a cost-of-living adjustment to adapt disability payments to the economy in 1975.
However, this year and last year, inflation was too low for the SSA to warrant an increase. The COLA for 2012 will increase disability payments by 3.6 percent.
The nearly 60 million Americans receiving disability payments should notice the change in payments at the end of December or beginning of next year. With the 3.6 percent increase in payments, the average increase to monthly disability payments is estimated to be about $39.
