Denver Water warns residents of potential lead con…
Denver Water has announced the results from recent water tests in the city after it was found that nearly one out of every eight homes that has lead plumbing may be using lead-contaminated water.Lead contamination can lead to many health risks such as nerve and brain damage. This is why Denver Water has now warned residents in the area of the situation and urged homeowners to limit their use of the water. The amount of lead that is allowed in water because of the federal standard is 15 parts per billion. Lead concentration in nearly 60 homes exceeded this limit. These numbers mean that nearly 12 percent of homes in the area have high levels of lead, which has increased from 8 percent in 2011.Officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health have recommended that people in affected areas seek testing, especially children in low-income homes because they face the highest risk of exposure. The Environmental Protection Agency requires cities to take action when over 10 percent of homes face high levels of lead in their water.
