Although Shaffer’s original charge of vehicular homicide by reckless driving was dismissed, he now faces at least $9,000 in damages and is banned from operating any motor vehicle.
He was temporarily released on a $30,000 bond and allowed to return home to Iowa to await further court hearings.

Construction worker killed in accident near Aspen…
Last Thursday afternoon, a construction worker was killed in a tragic accident near Aspen. Police report that the victim was a 39-year old man from Minnesota working for a construction company out of Denver.
According to Pitkin County officials, the fatal accident occurred when the worker's safety cord became caught and tangled in a hard-rock construction drill. The worker was then pulled into the auger.
Several co-workers witnessed the accident and stopped the auger, but it was too late. Investigators will be looking into the accident further.
Our utmost sympathies go out to the victim's family and friends.
Widow files wrongful death suit in towing accident…
The widow of a Colorado Springs tow truck driver has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the 33-year old driver that caused the fatal towing accident that killed her husband. The 35-year old J&J Towing co-owner was killed while attempting to tow a vehicle from an apartment complex parking lot in February.
The lawsuit was filed against the 33-year old woman whose GMC SUV was illegally parked and being towed. The woman has been charged with manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury.
The woman jumped in her vehicle and attempted to drive away as the tow truck driver was towing her vehicle. In the process, the tow truck driver's legs were caught in the tow cables and he was dragged for more than a mile.
Four Loko maker sued for wrongful death…
The family of a 15-year old boy who was killed after an evening of drinking Four Lokos has filed suit against the drink's maker, Phusion Projects. Four Loko products have often been criticized for combining high amounts of caffeine and alcohol. The combination desensitizes consumers to the affects of alcohol.
The wrongful death lawsuit says the company was "careless and negligent" for creating such a dangerous beverage and marketing it towards young audiences. The 15-year old was able to purchase two Four Lokos at a convenience store in the fall of 2010. He drank the caffeinated, alcoholic beverages at a concert and began acting "erratic and agitated."
The boy's mother was called by concert venue officials to pick him up. On their way home, the teen got out of the car and took off running. The 15-year old ran into a busy highway and was struck by a car. The boy passed away the next day.
