1 killed, 4 injured in ambulance accident near Avondale

Yesterday, a fatal three-vehicle accident occurred east of Avondale on U.S. 50. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the car accident happened when an ambulance on its way to a hospital in Colorado Springs crashed into a Dodge pickup truck. The collision sent the westbound Dodge head-on into an eastbound vehicle.

The ambulance hit the truck’s back right side as the truck moved into the left westbound lane to turn onto 51st Lane. The vehicle that the truck was pushed into was a Mercury Mountaineer SUV. The ambulance and SUV both continued driving for a few yards after the accident, until falling into a ditch off the side of the highway and flipping.

An 84-year-old man being transported in the ambulance was flown to Penrose Main Hospital, after the accident. He later passed away from his injuries. An 18-year-old and a 40-year-old in the SUV were taken to St. Mary Corwin with unspecified injuries. Two people in the truck suffered minor injuries.
