Is Colorado the Worst State for Driving?

cars driving on a highway, raining | colorado the worst state for drivingColorado commutes can be painful and long. Gridlock traffic into and out of cities like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Arvada increases the number of car accidents that occur. In fact, traffic congestion costs the average driver over $1,400 per year in excess gasoline and traffic accidents. Yet, how is Colorado driving compared to other cities in the United States? Do we have the worst commutes or the best? And are we falling behind?

A new report by WalletHub evaluated the 100 most populous cities in the United States for four factors:

  • Cost of ownership and maintenance
  • Traffic and infrastructure
  • Safety
  • Access to vehicles and maintenance

While Colorado didn’t crack the top ten best or worst states for driving, there was significant room for improvement. The report found that Colorado ranked 33rd in the country for overall driving. Drivers in the state scored poorly in cost of ownership and maintenance (37th), traffic and infrastructure (31st) and safety (25th). The state scored slightly better in access to vehicles and maintenance (16th).

Safety experts agree that Colorado can reduce the number of traffic fatalities by enforcing and enhancing current seat belt laws. Currently in Colorado, all drivers and every front seat passenger are required to wear a seat belt when driving. However, this law is a secondary offense, meaning that drivers may not be cited for breaking this law unless they are already stopped by a law enforcement officer for another violation. Changing this law to a primary seat belt law would save lives.

Another way Colorado can reduce the number of traffic fatalities is by enforcing and enhancing cell phone laws. Current law bans the use of cell phones for drivers under the age of 18 at all times. Texting or using email while driving is banned for all drivers. Restricted cell phone use violations are a Class A traffic offense, meaning that first time offenders are just issued a $50 ticket. Enhancing these laws would absolutely save lives. Currently a new bill to make driving while using a handheld cell phone device illegal is currently ready to be addressed in the 2019 legislative session.
