Tragic Hit and Run at Denver Intersection Caused by Drunk Driver

A tragic hit and run accident occurred at a Denver intersection in September, when a teenage boy was struck and killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street. The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Wadsworth Boulevard and West 100th Avenue just after 11pm. The driver immediately fled the scene of the accident but was apprehended and arrested a short distance away. He was immediately charged with Failure to Report an Accident, Hit and Run Involving a Death, and Driving Under the Influence.

At the time of the accident, it appeared that the teenager was crossing the street against traffic and without a green light. However, no matter who causes the accident, leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence are crimes.

Drunk Driving & Hit and Run Accidents are Deadly

Drunk driving claims the lives of over 100,000 people every year according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Colorado crash trends continue to show that in the Mile High State, drunk driving is still one of the top three causes of fatal and injury accidents. In fact, in 2016, alcohol related fatalities accounted for 27% of all Colorado traffic accident deaths. Sadly, this represented a 5.9% increase from the previous year.

Leaving the scene of an accident in Colorado is a crime. If that accident leads to injury or death, then you could face serious consequences for fleeing. That’s because immediately after an injury accident, victims need emergency medical attention. After all, minutes can make a difference between life and death. When drivers flee the scene of an accident and fail to lend aid, they compromise accident victims and increase the likelihood of medical complications.
