Westminster Woman, Eva Marie Goddard Brown, in Fatal Distracted Driving Accident

man texting while driving | Eva Marie Goddard Brown in Fatal Distracted Driving AccidentWestminster woman, Eva Marie Goddard Brown, was struck by a 16-year old driver at a bus stop on Thursday July 11th. The accident occurred right before 6 a.m. in the 7000 block of Sheridan Boulevard.

Tragically, the 62-year old woman did not survive. Another man was seriously injured in the crash, and taken to the hospital.

The driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with the police, was eventually arrested and released, and is awaiting charges. While police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were the cause of the accident, it does appear that the driver was distracted at the time of the crash.

Police estimate it will take several months for them to complete their investigation, and determine the proper charges to file.

The Devastating Consequences of Distracted Driving

Hundreds of thousands of people are injured by distracted drivers each year in the United States. In fact, in 2017 alone, 3,166 lives were lost due to distracted driving car accidents. Anything that takes a driver’s attention away from the road, can be considered a driving distraction. Of course, in 2019, technology is the main distraction, with cell phones being the most common cause of these types of accidents.

A car can travel the length of a football field, going 55 miles per hour, in just 5 seconds. Think about that carefully. When a driver takes their eyes off the road for just 5 seconds, they travel 360 feet in that time, without any attention being paid to what is going on in front of their vehicle. That is more than enough time for something terrible to happen.

When the negligent actions of a distracted driver devastates the lives of innocent people, that driver has a responsibility to try and alleviate that damage, as much as that can be possible.

Injured people and their families are already dealing with the consequences of their injury, they shouldn’t be forced to contend with expensive medical bills, and the costs associated with the wrongful death of a loved one, as well. The injured are due justice, and fair compensation for their loses.
