Study suggests welfare leads to marital dissatisfaction

A recent study into the relationship between marital satisfaction and income suggests that couples receiving government assistance — such as welfare, Medicaid, or food stamps — are more likely to experience marital dissatisfaction leading to divorce.

Researchers involved in the study acknowledge that financial issues are widely known to contribute to divorce.  However, in the study, researchers compared couples within the same income range and compared those receiving government assistance to those not receiving any form of government assistance.

Surveys revealed that among couples with an income of $20,000 or less, couples receiving government assistance were much more likely to report experiencing marital dissatisfaction than those couples within the same income bracket, but not receiving government assistance.

If you or someone you know is considering filing for divorce and would like to speak with an experienced family law attorney, contact the Denver settlement and mediation lawyers of Hull & Zimmerman, P.C. at (303) 423-1770 to learn more about how we can help you.
