Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Lawyers

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious concern for boaters and swimmers alike, as the exhaust from watercrafts’ motors can include substantial amounts of this potentially lethal gas. In non-fatal instances, excessive carbon monoxide exposure can still result in serious and sometimes long-term health problems. Because this gas is difficult to detect due to its colorless and odorless nature, a person can easily inhale a life-threatening amount of carbon monoxide without realizing it. Thus, boat operators have the important responsibility of preventing others from suffering carbon monoxide exposure.

Carbon Monoxide Hazards on the Water

Boat owners are charged with making sure that their exhaust pipes are working properly to push carbon monoxide away from passengers and swimmers near the boat. They should also avoid the following scenarios in order to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Allowing swimmers and people on water skis, wakeboards, inner tubes, and other apparatuses to stay within 20 feet of the back of an idling boat for prolonged periods of time
  • Allowing the motor to run and exhaust to build up inside a covered dock
  • Operating a boat in a way that allows a carbon monoxide buildup in the air pockets under the boat’s swimming platforms
  • Failing to address leaks in a boat’s hull that may allow exhaust to fill interior cabins

Carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to immediate respiratory failure, loss of consciousness, and other serious health concerns that can be compounded due drowning should the loss of consciousness occur while in the water.
