6 Important Things You Should Do After a Slip and Fall Accident

slippery fall hazard signSlip and fall accidents are no laughing matter. While you may initially feel embarrassed after a slip and fall accident in public, it is important to know that these accidents can cause serious injury. In fact, the CDC reports that slip and fall accidents actually result in over 8 million emergency room visits each and every year. Knowing what to do after a slip and fall accident is critical to receiving the compensation you need to recover. The worst thing you can do is pretend you are uninjured and leave the scene.

Make sure you notify management of your accident and be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Seek Medical Attention Immediately – immediately after the accident, you may not believe you’re injured. However, serious injuries are often masked by the surge of adrenaline that occurs after an accident. Seek medical attention immediately. Your medical report will be an important piece of the puzzle when trying to collect the compensation you deserve.
  2. Report the Incident – when you’ve slipped and fallen in a store or business, be sure to report this incident to the store manager, landlord, or owner. Insist that the business manager fills out an incident report. This report will be invaluable to your case.
  3. Gather Evidence – if you are able, take pictures at the accident scene of any hazards, including wet floors, missing caution signs, or loose carpeting. Be sure to get the names and numbers of any eyewitnesses as well. Document the time of the incident, as well as any other important conditions that may have contributed to your fall.
  4. Don’t Give a Recorded Statement – the store’s insurance company may try and obtain a recorded statement from you after the accident. Don’t give any type of recorded statement without first speaking to an attorney. You are not under any obligation to speak to a claims adjuster after the accident. Your answers could be used against you.
  5. Avoid Social Media – you may be tempted to post about your accident and injuries on social media, however, this is never a good idea. Don’t discuss any aspects of your accident or injuries on social media and avoid posting pictures that could be used to show that you aren’t as injured as you claim to be.
  6. Hire an Attorney – after a slip and fall accident, you may need an experienced and skilled slip and fall accident attorney on your side in order to collect the compensation you need. Your attorney can be invaluable when navigating the claims process and negotiating with insurance companies.
