How did you first become interested in law? What was it about personal injury law appealed to you in particular?
I developed an interest in law while I was in college at Duke University, where I majored in history. Dean Gerald Wilson suggested that with my interests, law would be a good fit for me. He encouraged me to apply to the University of Denver College of Law because of its Student Law Office program. Upon entering DU, I became involved in litigating actual cases through the Student Law Office. It was there that I met my future law partner, Mike Zimmerman. In addition, I discovered that I had a passion and talent for arguing cases and decided that I should pursue the civil litigation field of law.
What made personal injury law so interesting to me was the one-on-one connection with other people. I like that I am in a position to help people through a difficult time in their lives and help them reach a tangible result that they would not be able to accomplish alone.
How do you help clients through the legal process?
When we sit down for a consultation with a new client, we tell them we’re interviewing them as much as they’re interviewing us. It is important for a lawyer and client to match well personality-wise, because starting a legal case together is the beginning of a working relationship that may last for several years, depending on the circumstances of the case. Taking on a legal case is a collaborative process, so a lawyer and client must be able to work well together.
Many people have no experience being involved in legal matters and do not understand how the legal process works. We understand this and we are prepared to educate our clients and answer any questions that they may have. Whenever we start a case, we give our clients an overview of the stages of the legal process so that they know roughly how the case will proceed. However, we also tell clients not to worry about the legal details of the case, because that is our job. We are here to handle your case for you so that you can focus on getting better.
How do you approach your personal injury cases?
We take a people-centered approach in everything that we do. After an injury, our clients often just want their daily routine back. They want to be able to get better, do their job again, and return to as normal a life as possible. But this takes time. When you take on a personal injury case, you get just one shot at a settlement. If you try to settle the case before you know the full extent of a client’s injuries, you could end up receiving a much smaller payment than what the client ultimately needs. For that reason we prefer to wait until the full extent of a client’s injuries is known. We do not rush cases or expect our clients to take a quick settlement. We want to make sure that you receive the largest settlement possible to cover all of your injury costs.
Why do you think clients choose you over other firms in the Denver area?
One of the best attributes of our firm is that we are very client-focused. We believe strongly in having a good relationship with each and every one of our clients. We have been known to turn down clients if, for whatever reason, we don’t feel that we are the right fit for them or vice versa. With many other firms, clients don’t get this kind of personalized approach. They are forced through the legal process assembly-line style, regardless of the unique factors affecting their case.
At Hull & Zimmerman, we take the opposite approach. We talk in great detail with our clients about their concerns and what they hope to achieve in their case. During the initial period of a case, we immediately become their legal advocate and shield our clients from the legal minutia associated with the beginning of the process. We ask our clients to focus on getting better first and foremost, and when they are medically and emotionally ready to move forward, we engage them more in the legal process. We believe the best way to help our personal injury clients is to assist them in putting all parts of their pre-incident lives back together.
Another advantage to our firm over other firms is that when you call our office, Mike and I are the ones who will talk to you on the phone. We do not pass our cases off to some inexperienced associate to handle. We work on each case ourselves and take the time to have personalized conversations with our clients. Our clients appreciate that we are the ones taking their calls and answering their questions. They know that we will help to clarify any issues that they have and that we will make decisions based on what is best for them.
At Hull & Zimmerman, P.C., we are honored to help accident victims in their time of need, and take our responsibility as personal injury lawyers incredibly seriously. We know how important it is for victims to secure the full and fair compensation they need following a serious accident, and that is why we take a hands-on, personalized approach to every case we handle.
